One of James Whitcomb Riley's most popular poems, "Little Orphant Annie," (Mary Alice Smith) was based on a girl who stayed with his family. She helped to watch the Riley children until she turned 16. She passed away in 1924 and is buried in the Philadelphia Church Cemetery. There is a memorial marker noting her status as the real-life Little Orphant Annie.
