Also known as US 40 and Main Street (through the county seat of Greenfield), the National Road bisects Hancock County east to west. Travelers along this Scenic Byway will be able to see several of Hancock County’s smaller communities: Cumberland, Philadelphia, Spring Lake, Cleveland, and Charlottesville. Hancock County has been touted as the third fastest growing county in the state of Indiana, and it does not disappoint the traveler with lots of things to see and do.
Greenfield offers travelers the most amenities with several different restaurants and retail locations in town. Most of Greenfield’s unique locally owned restaurants and shops will be found right on Main Street or within a block or two of it. Riley Park, the county’s largest green space, with all sorts of sporting facilities, playground equipment, swimming pool and picnic places, is also on the main thoroughfare. While visiting the park, take time to check out the Hancock County Historical Society’s Chapel in the Park and Old Log Jail Museums (right), which are open to the public (for a small fee) on the weekends from April through October. And speaking of museums, also located along the National Road is the James Whitcomb Riley Boyhood Home and Museum. (below) |
