Marion County

Indianapolis was only six years old when the National Road was surveyed across Indiana and routed through the fledgling state capital.

The road served as a major conduit for economic growth for the city in a crucial stage of its development. The downtown built up around Washington St. and today it is a major thoroughfare through the National Road’s largest city!

There are many attractions on the National Road in Indianapolis including shopping at the Circle Centre Mall, spending time at the Indianapolis Zoo and visiting the Indiana State Museum. Only a block north of Washington St. is the iconic Soldiers and Sailors Monument! There are hundreds of attractions and shops on Washington St. in Indiana’s capital city.

Irvington

The community and neighborhood of Irvington is also an important place to visit on Indianapolis’s section of the National Road! The town was named after the author Washington Irving and established as one of Indianapolis’s first planned suburbs in 1870. Irvington was later annexed into the larger city in 1903. Butler University was formerly located in Irvington and the former library, the Bona Thompson Memorial Center, still exists today. Irvington was also known in the early 1900s as a popular spot for writers and artists. There is a lot of culture and history to experience in one of Indianapolis’s most iconic neighborhoods. Along the main commercial stretch, on the National Road, there is a variety of historic architecture, unique local shops, and restaurants. Irvington is one of Indianapolis’s largest National Register and locally designated historic districts.
