Putnam County

Many settlements and towns sprung up along the National Road in Putnam County with its arrival in the 1832.

Stilesville, Belleville, and Putnamville were all founded within a few years after the road was surveyed. However, the railroads between Indianapolis and Terre Haute were routed north to the county seat of Greencastle.
The National Road offers a scenic drive of beautiful farmland and historic buildings. Just east of Putnamville is one of the most historic sections of the National Road. Located on W Co Rd 570s, and just north of U.S. 40, is a section of the 1920s alignment and an iconic bridge across Deer Creek.

North on U.S. 231 is the county seat of Green Castle. Though the National Road did not deviate from its planned alignment to hit Putnam County’s first settlement and County seat, the National Road brings travelers within 7 miles of the city. Travelers coming westward to Greencastle may have traveled the National Road, and U.S. 40 is still a popular route to get to Greencastle from the eastern parts of the state. Included in this passport are several locations that bring you off the National Road into Greencastle’s beautiful and historic downtown.

Behind the Old Walker Motel lies another section of the original national Road. Drive down the hill behind the motel to the enormous concrete bridge over Deer Creek. Look over the south side of the bridge to see where early pioneers forged the river and where the original covered and iron bridges crossed the creek. The concrete bridge eventually replaced these structures and served as the only way across the creek until U.S. 40 was rerouted to its current location. From this one spot, travelers can view four generations of the Historic National Road.
