The Wabash River and Wabash and Erie Canals provided key waterways to the city, but the main land route was the National Road. The National Road reached Terre Haute in the 1830s, and until the railroads, it was the main path into the Queen City of the Wabash.
Terre Haute is home to a number of higher education institution, a number of museums and attractions, and plenty of places to get a great meal! Indiana State University, a long standing institution, has a number of buildings designed by locally famous firm Miller and Yeager, and its successors. The Rose-Hulman institute, a top-ranked engineering school, has also been a long standing educational institution in the city. Rose-Hulman partnered with the Indiana National Road association to save a 1931 filling station that resembles a cottage. The historic gas station currently serves as a concession stand for school’s baseball and soccer fields. |
